Here is your weekly update!
1. GEB Update
Thank you to EVERYONE who helped judge, donated food and to the kids who made the tournament an extremely smooth endeavor. With as easy as this was, I have full faith that we will be able to be excellent hosts for the NSDA LD, PFD, and IE national qualifiers in April! I hope some of you who were first time judges saw it was easier than you may have thought!
They are in powerschool and updated. There are two reasons grades may have dropped.
The minimum was 15, and some folks missed that mark by a little, others by a lot. Students who were unsuccessful at helping recruit judges for this tournament will have the opportunity to make those points up in April once we start recruiting judges for the qualifiers.
This is a new requirement after each tournament, some students may have done them but just not shared their forms with me. Everyone will be reminded about this in class tomorrow (I only saw 8th hour today) and once they fix it and notify me, I will fix their grades.
3. This Weekend
We are headed to Emporia on Friday and 2 spots in Johnson County on Saturday. We have an EARLY depart time on Saturday, so please check for the appropriate tournament.
Travel Sheet 3--Emporia Fri, BVW and SMNW
We voted, and we have a design. The shirt/design the students selected came out to around $16 a shirt. Some students said $16 is ok, some said it is a challenge, and we agreed that if you want a shirt, sign up and if you have a few extra bucks to kick in, feel free to do so to help cover the costs of folks who want one but may not be able to afford it (if you fall in that camp, I need to know ASAP!)
Here is the sign-up sheet (if parents want one, feel free!)
Forensics T-Shirt Order 2016
As always, please let me know if you have any questions!
This is your first update for the 2016 competitive season! I know several of you may have been on the debate list, and if I put in the wrong email, am missing a parent, step parent, or another email address, it means your student forgot to put it in their spreadsheet for me. If you give me someone to add, I will stick them in the contact book for subsequent emails! There are several things to note this week!
1. Keep in touch with us on the internets!
If you are not already aware, there are two areas where I will post results updates, results, and photos throughout the year.
A. Website: http://thsdebateandforensics.weebly.com/
B. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TopekaHighSchoolDebateAndForensics/
2. Our Forensics tournament is on the horizon.
Your students have been told for the past two weeks, that our tournament is a week earlier this year than years past. Each student is required to recruit a minimum of 15 rounds of judging for our tournament. It is on the 12th and 13th of February. Feel free to sign yourself, or friends or family up to judge! They have to be out of high school etc. but there are no other qualifications. Our sign-up sheet can be found at:
3. Here is the travel information sheet for Shawnee Heights this weekend:
As we will do for all tournaments that are in Shawnee County, we will provide transportation TO the school on Friday, but we ask that you help us out by picking them up AT the school on Friday and transporting them TO/From the school on Saturday morning. If you are unable to do so, please let me know and we will try to make some arrangements to help you out! For out of town tournaments we will transport them to/from the tournament.
Some of you may be concerned about the "threat" directed at heights. From as far as I have heard, there is little to be concerned about, and there will be some extra security/administrative presence at the tournament as there are other events in the building that night. If this is a reason you might be anxious about your child traveling/competing, please let me know and we can talk things out, but I believe everything should be fine.
If you do not know how to get to Shawnee Heights High School, there is a set of Google Maps from Topeka High School to Shawnee Heights at the bottom of the email.
I am looking forward to a great season, please let me know if you have any questions/comments/concerns!
